The Prodigal God: The Younger Son - Luke 15:11-24
Speaker: Ken Boonstra
Lostness. Flagrant disrespect for his father. A violation of family. The sin seems obvious. But there’s more than sin here, we also begin to see God’s amazing love.

Song of Praise: Not What My Hands Have Done v. 3
“Let all the godly pray to you while there is still time…” Psalm 32:3
As we continue to explore the parable of the two lost sons in Luke 15, we again use words from Psalm 32 to frame our worship. We open with a sung expression of gratitude and praise “…for love in creation, for heaven restored, for grace of salvation, sing praise to the Lord”.
Psalm 32 says “what joy for those whose record the Lord has cleared of guilt”. We respond by acknowledging “…only by grace can we enter; only by grace can we stand; not by our human endeavors; but by the blood of the Lamb” and “…my Lord I did not choose you for that could never be… I know that if I love you, you must have first loved me”.
Psalm 32 says “I will confess my rebellion to the Lord… and you forgave me! All my guilt is gone”. We respond “… my Jesus I love thee… I love thee because thou hast first loved me”.
Psalm 32 says “Unfailing love surrounds those who trust the Lord”. We respond with praise “…this is my joyful song – Thy love to me”, and with a sung prayer: “…O let me from this day be wholly thine …this is my earnest plea, more love O Christ to thee”.
As we worship by giving our money gifts we remember, “…everyone needs compassion… our God is mighty to save!”
We close the service by remembering again “…Not what my hands have done can save my guilty soul; not what my toiling flesh has borne can make my spirit whole; not what I feel or do can give me peace with God; not all my prayers and sighs and tears can bear my awful load” and with these words of praise “…I praise the Christ of God, I rest on love divine; and with unfaltering lip and heart I call this Saviour mine; the Lord has saved my life and freely pardon gives; I love because he first loved me, I live because he lives!” Amen.

Song of Praise: Praise to the Lord, the Almighty
“…I’m here to meet with you, come and meet with me; I’m here to find you, reveal yourself to me”
As we again consider Luke 15 and reflect on the younger brother’s story in this familiar passage, words from Psalm 32 frame our worship.
We read, “…what joy for those whose record the Lord has cleared of guilt”, and we respond, “…not what my hands have done can save my guilty soul”; “…the lord is gracious and compassionate, slow to anger and rich in love – praise the Lord oh my soul!”
We read, “…let the godly pray to you while there is still time”, and we respond “…create in me a clean heart, oh God”.
We read, “…unfailing love surrounds those who trust the Lord”, and we respond “…great is your faithfulness, wide is your love and grace, you never change, you never fail, oh God”. As we worship with the giving of our money gifts we declare, “…in a dry and weary land, you (God) are my water”.
After we reflect on the story of the younger son in Luke 15 we respond by remembering “…better is one in your courts than thousands elsewhere”. Following God’s blessing, we respond with this doxology “…praise to the Lord who will prosper your work and defend you; surely his goodness and mercy shall daily attend you; ponder anew what the Almighty can do as with his love he befriends you”. Amen.
